Destroy split ends / Der Splissschnitt


Über ein Jahr schnittfrei ist bei aller Liebe und Pflege auch an meinem Haar natürlich nicht spurlos vorrüber gegangen. Es ist ja sowieso nicht das stabilste und ich habe viel geflochten und offen getragen, somit war es nicht verwunderlich, dass ich Spliss bekommen habe.
Schnittfrei zu sein, impliziert zwar eigentlich nur, dass man nichts von der Länge wegnimmt, aber ich habe wirklich so gar nicht geschnitten, es gab also auch ein Jahr lang keine Splissschnitte. Letzteres habe ich nun gründlich nachgeholt.
Over a year without cuts left some traces in my hair even though I cared for it with all my love. You know my hair is rather fragile and I wore it down and braided very often so it is no big surprise, that this caused some damage: split ends. To grow your hair cutless actually means that you don't trim the length but in fact I was totally cutless, as I also did not do my regular splitend cuts. I caught up on these now.

 Wie entsteht Spliss?
Spliss entsteht nicht nur in den längsten Haaren, sondern ist allgemein dort zu finden, wo das Haar Reibung ausgesetzt ist. Das ist besonders in den Haarspitzen der Fall, somit nicht nur an der Schnittkante, sondern auch überall dort, wo ein einzelnes Haar gerade endet. Durch das Aufstoßen der Haarspitzen spleißt das Haar auf, vor allem, wenn es sowieso schon trocken und/oder geschwächt ist (geschwächt durch Alter, Färbungen, häufige Wäschen... etc.). Spliss kann also bei entsprechenden Belastungen auch mitten im Haar auftreten, aber das ist etwas seltener.
What causes split ends?
Split ends are not only located at your hemline but all over your hair in the tips of the single hairstrands, especially in areas which suffer from friction: lengths which touch an obstacle like your shoulders or your booty, areas which are tied often with elastics. Hair which is already weakend due to other stress caused by dye, heat or handling splits more easyly. Also in the middle of a single hair can be found splits when the hair suffered from damage before. 

Warum ist Spliss eigentlich schlecht?
Ja wieso denn? Geteiltes Haar gleich doppelt so viel Haar?! Na, eher nicht. Gesplisstes Haar ist glanzlos und trocken. Spliss ist aus der Nähe sehr unschön sichtbar als helle, ausgefranste Enden. Je dunkler die eigene Haarfarbe ist, desto auffälliger ist dies in der Regel.
Zudem verkletten die Haar stärker, wenn sie gesplisst sind, da die Schuppenschicht nicht mehr glatt und geschlossen ist. Reißt der gesplisste Teil immer weiter ein, wird immer mehr vom betroffenen Haar geschädigt. Das kann passieren, muss aber nicht. Besonders sehr kleiner Spliss bleibt meist sehr lange in diesem Millimetersplissstadium. Durch das Verkletten allerdings reißt es beim Entwirren, auch andere Haare werden überdehnt und das führt wiederum zu Folgeschäden an noch mehr Haar.
But why don't we want split ends? Split hair means double amount of hair, right?! No. Split hair is dry and does not shine. The splits are visible as light spots in the mane, the darker you hair is, the more you see them. Besides that split ends lead to tangled hair which overstretches when combed easily and this leads o further damage. Split ends can (don't have to) open up wider over the time and level up from mini millimeter splits up to feathery centimeter splits.

Wie funktioniert ein Splissschnitt?
Nun wisst ihr auch, weshalb ein Spitzenschnitt kein Splissschnitt ist. Um den Spliss aus der Mähne zu schneiden, habt ihr zwei Möglichkeiten:
1. Ihr nehmt eine Haasträhne und dreht sie ein und schneidet alles ab, was an Spitzchen übersteht. Dabei erwischt ihr sehr viel Spliss, aber längst nicht allen, außerdem werden auch gesunde Haarenden gekappt. An der Länge geht nichts verloren, wohl aber etwas an der Dichte. Je nach Haarlänge und vor allem -dichte dauert so ein Splissschnitt ungefähr eine Stunde.
How to destroy split ends: You already know now that a split end cut is not the same as trimming the ends. To get rid of your split ends you have two possibilities:
1. Take a strand of hair, twist it and cut off all ends poking out. Like this you cut of many split ends but by far not all and you also cut healthy hairends. You don't lose overall length, but a small amount of volume. Depending on hair's length and thickness this way of destroying split ends takes about an hour.
2. Search & Destroy, S&D. Meine Methode der Wahl. Hier untersucht ihr Strähne für Strähne in gutem Licht vor einem kontrastierenden Hintergrund und schneidet nur die gesplissten Haarenden einzeln heraus. Das dauert. Aber ihr erwischt nur gesplisstes Haar und verliert somit bedeutend weniger Dichte. Außerdem findet ihr so auch mehr vom Spliss. Um meine Haare komplett zu entsplissen, habe ich insgesamt fünf Runden à jeweils 30-60 Minuten gebraucht. Dabei gehe ich systematisch vor: Alle Haare auf eine Seite nehmen und dann Strähnchen für Strähnchen herüber holen, untersuchen, schnibbeln und weglegen. Bei der nächsten Sitzung fange ich von der anderen Seite an.
2. Search & Destroy, S&D. This is my method of choice. Here you examine strand per strand in good lighting in front of a contrasting background and cut off only the single split ends. Thsi takes time. But like this you get rid of almost every split end and you lose only very few amount of thickness as you don't cut healthy ends. To desplit my whole head of hair I needed five session à 30-60 minutes each. I proceed systematically starting at one side of my head, taking a strand, examine it, cut and put aside. Next strand. And so on. For the following session I start from the other side of my head.

Rechts: 2x Spliss, 2x Splissvorstufe (Haarenden, die schon wie eine kleine weiße Kugel aussehen). Nur diese vier Haare werden kurz über dem beschädigten Teil gekappt.
Left: cut off everything beyond the line, no matter if it is split or not.
Right: 2x split ends, 2x "will be split ends soon" (hairtips which look like a small white dot). Only these four hairs are cut close above the damaged part.


Stunden investieren, um Jahre zu erhalten
Warum ich mir das antue? Weil ich mit dem regulären Splissschnitt bei meinem geringen Volumen zu viel Dichte einbüßen würde. Würde ich spitzenschneiden, wie es die meisten Frisöre fälschlicherweise bei Spliss empfehlen, dann hätte ich gut 15-20cm (das war bei mir der am stärksten versplisste Bereich) opfern müssen. Indiskutabel. Ich opfere nicht 1,5 Jahre Längenzucht, wenn ich stattdessen auch drei Stunden Search & Destroy haben kann. Einfache Rechnung in meinen Augen.
Invest some hours to save years. Why do I prefer such an annoyingly long procedure? Because with the regular split end cut I lose too much volume as my hair already is so thin. If I went for a trim of my hairends like most hairdresses suggest I had to sacrifice 15-20cm to get rid of the area with the most split ends. No way. This means 1,5 years of growing my hair! In my eyes the calculation is simple: I invest 3 hours of search and destroy to save this growth of 18 month.

Ergebnis
Das ist mehr, als wenn ich einen 2cm Spitzenschnitt gemacht hätte, aber bedeutend weniger, als würde ich besagte 15-20cm kappen. Und dann hätte ich ja immer noch Spliss. Weiter oben.
Result. This is more as if I cut 2cm of length at my hemline, but significantly less than a cut of 15-20cm. And chopping this off would still leave me with splits. Just higher in my mane. 

Ich habe insgesamt 5x Spliss geschnitten, jeweils 30-60min. Jedes Mal kam etwa diese Menge runter. Bei der ersten Session etwas mehr, bei den letzten etwas weniger.
I cut 5 times split ends for always 30-60min. Everytime I ended up with such a result. More hairends at the first session, less at the last.

Splissprävention
Das Wichtigste ist die Vermeidung von Reibung, denn dadurch entsteht der Spliss erst. Alle anderen Vorschädigungen führen nur dazu, dass das letztliche Splissen schneller passiert. Schlimme Splisser sind somit auf Kleidung scheuernde Zöpfe (je gröber der Stoff, je schwerer und steifer der Zopf, desto schlimmer), außerdem Übergangslängen, die auf Schultern oder Gesäß aufstoßen, und die üblichen Killer rund um Hitzestyling, Färbung, Blondierung, Toupieren, gratige Kämme und so weiter. Eigene Erwähnung sollte noch das Haargummi an immer derselbem Stelle finden, egal, ob es das am Kopf für den Pferdeschwanz ist oder das am Zopfende, zum Sichern der Flechterei. Das verursacht Bruch und gebrochenes Haar splisst schneller auf, als glatt abgeschnittenes. Nie geschnittenes Haar hat angeblich die höchste Splissresistenz, durch das spitz zulaufende Haarende. Leider kann ich euch dazu keine Erfahrungen mitgeben, die Theorie allerdings erscheint mir plausibel.
Da das dann aber in sehr langen zipfeligen Längen gipfeln würde, ist das für die allermeisten keine Option.
Split end prevention. The best you can do is to avoid friction, because this is the main cause for split ends. All other predamages just lead to split ends due to friction faster. So bad splitters are braids on clothes (the tighter the braid and the coarser the cloth the worse it is, as the single hair can't slip away) followed by hairlengths which end on stopping areas like shoulders or your bum and of course the common hairkillers like heatstyling, dyeing, belaching, teasing, grated combs and so on. What deserves to be mentioned alone are hairties always at the same position, no matter if it is the base of a braid or ponytail or to secure the end of your braids. This leads to brakage and brakage leaves the hair blunt at the end, not neatly cut as it is after a cut with the scissors. It is said that hair which has never been cut has the highest resistance against split ends, because of its naturally closed shape. I have no own experiences here but the theory sounds plausible to me. As this leads to finally VERY long hair this is unfortunately no option for most of us.

Zusammengefasst
Behandelt eure Haare vorsichtig, vermeidet Reibung und andere Belastungen, pflegt so, dass sie nicht trocken werden und schneidet Spliss mit der S&D-Methode heraus, um möglichst wenig Länge und Dichte einzubüßen. Und entspannt euch. Spliss passiert. So ist das einfach bei fast allen langen Haaren. Kein Grund panisch zu behaupten (und in die Tat umzusetzen!), dass man nur einen Longbob tragen könne, weil sonst alles kaputt brechen würde. Wenn dem so ist, ist nicht Spliss euer Problem, sondern generell falsch behandeltes Haar, was dann zu spliss geführt hat.
Summary: Treat your hair lovingly and caring. Avoid friction and other stress, care in a way that prevents dryness and cut off split ends with the search and destroy method to safe your length and thickness. And just realx a bit about that topic. Split ends happen. It is normal for most long manes. It is no reason to proclame (and go for!) that a longbob is the longest length you can wear, because everything longer breaks and splits away. If this is the case, than you have other problems to fix with your hair, as the split ends than are only symptoms of wrong treatment.
